This course provides the participants with background information about the major parts and functions of the brain and the impact of neglect on the development of the brain in young children from birth to age five. The stages of brain development in infants, toddlers and preschoolers will be presented through the physical, cognitive, language and social-emotional domains and participants will discover the crucial role they have in planning and creating an environment that will enhance the brain development of children in their care. Participants will learn strategies and experience activities enabling them to facilitate the brain development of the children in their early childhood settings.
Course Topics:
- Discuss the three major parts of the brain and what body functions each part controls.
- Discuss the ways that long-term stress, neglect, and trauma raise the stress hormone levels in humans and how stress negatively effects the brain development of young children.
- Explain the importance of establishing secure, warm, responsive, consistent, supportive, and nurturing adult-child relationships when caring for young children as part of facilitating brain development.
- Describe and give examples of the developmental stages of young children as infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
- Describe the physical, cognitive, language and social-emotional domains of development in young children ages birth to five.
- Implement direct experience strategies and plan developmentally appropriate activities to lay the foundation for successful learning for the different developmental stages of infant, toddler, and preschooler that incorporate the four domains of learning: physical, cognitive, language, and social-emotional.
