Child care providers will learn how to recognize and manage suspected child abuse and neglect. This course provides instruction on types of abuse and neglect, strategies for responding to suspected child victims and their parents, the child protective services response process, and knowing when and how to report suspected abuse and neglect. Virginia law mandates that child care providers report suspected child abuse and neglect.
Course Topics:
- Recognize that child abuse/neglect occurs within families and in other places where children are provided care and services.
- Explain the causes of abuse and neglect.
- Explain the legal and operational definitions of physical abuse, neglect and sexual abuse.
- Recognize injuries that may indicate physical abuse.
- Identify conditions and practices that mimic physical abuse.
- Differentiate between abuse and discipline.
- Describe the dangers of shaking an infant.
- Recognize behavioral indicators of physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse.
- Differentiate age and stage appropriate sexual curiosity in children from behaviors associated with sexual assault.
- Recognize the difference between poverty and neglect.
- Respond appropriately to the child and parent concerning suspected abuse or neglect.
- Explain mandated reporting requirements.
- Explain CPS mission, authorities, and services.
- Implement policies, procedures, and in-service training to support the effective management of suspected child abuse and neglect.
- Support children who have been abused/neglected.
