Personal Care Aide (PCA) Program

This course is designed to provide the participant with online and hands-on instruction on how to assist patients with health related daily living activities, patient transfers, nutrition, as well as oral and personal hygiene.  This PCA program is 40 hours - 32 hours online and eight hours of in-person hands-on training.  The training meets the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) curriculum for Home Health and Hospice.  This program is also accepted by Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) for ‘direct patient care staff’ in licensed assisted living facilities.
 
Participants will learn how to:
  • Administer bedside or personal care, such as ambulation or personal hygiene assistance.
  • Prepare and maintain records of client progress and services performed, reporting changes in client condition to manager or supervisor.
  • Perform healthcare-related tasks, such as monitoring vital signs and medication, under the direction of registered nurses or physiotherapists.
  • Participate in case reviews, consulting with the team caring for the client, to evaluate the client's needs and plan for continuing services.
  • Care for individuals or families during periods of incapacitation, family disruption, or convalescence, providing companionship, personal care, or help in adjusting to new lifestyles.
