Medical Terminology and Back to School Brush-up

This hybrid course teaches participants the principles of medical word building while also teaching participants educational techniques and strategies that can be utilized in health care training programs. This course is an excellent pre-requisite for participants who would like to enter health care training programs such as Medical Coding, but have little to no experience working in health care, have not participated in formal training programs, or have not taken medical terminology.
 
Rather than memorizing medical terms, Participants learn how to use word parts to build terms within the context of basic anatomy and physiology. The course focuses on correct pronunciation, spelling and use of medical terms as well as anatomy, physiology, and pathology of disease within each system within the human body.  This course will also help participants to understand the demands of the classroom and how to successfully meet those demands. Topics include:  understanding class culture and expectations, study skills, note-taking, how to study in a group, concept mapping, and accessing free learning resources.
 
Upon successful completion of this course, participants are able to do the following:
  • Describe the component parts of medical terms
  • Analyze the component parts of a medical term
  • Use basic prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms to build medical terms
  • Explain the common rules for proper medical term formation, pronunciation, and spelling
  • Relate the terminology to the names, locations, and functions of the major organs of the body systems
  • Describe the terms utilized for the major disease processes including symptoms, diagnosis, diagnostic testing, surgeries, and therapies
  • Define basic terms and abbreviations used in documenting health records
  • Participants will learn about:
    •  Expectations in and out of the classroom
    • Study Skills
    • Note taking
    • Studying in groups
    • Concept mapping
    • Accessing free learning resources
 
  • Participants will learn how to apply these new skills to learning medical terminology and for future training programs.
